Float
'N Fish Fly Shop and
Guide Service was established by Ray and
Wanda Johnston in 1997. Ray is a fourth generation and
lifelong resident of San Juan County, NM. With fly fishing a
family heritage, Ray began fly fishing and fly tying at a
very early age. Ray began commercial tying exclusively for
the San Juan River as a teenager for a little bait shop in
Aztec, named Handy Bait and Tackle. Ray and Wanda met
in the mid 1980's and have been fly fishing and tying
partners ever since. Spending 22 years in the
construction, ranching and horse businesses, Ray and
Wanda continued fly fishing and developing fly patterns for
the ever changing tail water below Navajo Dam. With the love
of the sport of fly fishing and the San Juan River, Ray and
Wanda's dream was to build a world class
Fly Shop and
Guide Service on the world
renowned San Juan River. It's taken a few years to
achieve our dream and to truly say we are a world class
Fly Shop and
Guide Service on the world
renowned San Juan River.
Fly Shop:
The largest and most complete fly fishing specialty shop in
the state of New Mexico. With 3600 square feet of the finest
gear and gadgets dedicated to the sport of fly fishing on
display, we can surely take care of your every fly fishing
need. With over 2,200 fly
patterns and over 25,000
flies on display, our selection is bigger than all the shops
in the area combined. We have flies for every destination
you might travel. From patterns for the small streams in
southwest
Colorado,
to bass, pike, carp and all the other species in our area
lakes. If you are traveling to the tropics, we have an
excellent selection of saltwater flies for tarpon, permit
and bonefish.
We also carry all the signature flies of the
local pioneer guides and tiers for the San Juan, like
Johnny Gomez,
Mark Engler,
Bear Goode,
John Tavenner,
Greg Faught and more. We
believe that once you experience the impressive selection we
have, you won’t want to buy your flies anywhere else. If you
arrive without your rod or waders, or you want to introduce
fly fishing to someone new, we also have the finest rental
equipment available. If you’re a fly tier, we have the
largest selection of fly tying materials, not only in the
state of New Mexico, but the whole southwest. We consider
ourselves the tail water
specialists, specializing in tying materials for the
micro patterns used on the tail waters of the San Juan and
other spring creeks, so we have the hard to find items like
14/0 threads and hooks down to size 32. But most important
is the personal attention you receive when you walk in the
door. Our professional and friendly staff will do their best
to provide you with up to the minute fishing conditions, hot
flies and the best spot to hook up with a trophy San Juan
trout.
Guide Service: We offer
both half day and full day guided fly fishing trips. You
have the choice to wade, float, or a combination of both.
The goal at Float ‘n Fish is to provide a quality fishing
experience. We feel that a guided fly fishing trip on the
San Juan River is the best way to maximize your time spent.
All trips are geared to the fisherman or fisherwomen’s
ability. The trips are designed to teach the beginner and
the experienced angler the best methods and techniques to
fly fish the San Juan. Our guides are friendly,
knowledgeable and seasoned professionals that we guarantee
will guide you to an enjoyable experience.
