 Hook Terminology Gape - Distance between the point and the shank. Some manufacturers apply special terminology to gape sizes to describe larger gapes. Examples would be 2X wide, 2.5X wide, etc, to describe a larger hook gape rather than the standard hook gape for that size of hook. Shank - Many manufactures use special terminology to describe hook shank length using terms such as 2X - 5X Long, to describe longer hook shanks or 1X - 3X Short to describe shank lenghts shorter than standard. Eye - Manufacturers build hooks with various eye designs to optimize the hook for different fishing condiotions. Examples would be Turned Up Eye (common with Steelhead and Salmon Flies), Turned Down Eye (common with most Dry Flies and Nymphs), Parallel Eye and Straight Eye (excellent for small Dries and Nymphs). Curve / Bend - Several manufacturers have specialty hooks with special hook bends for various fishing conditions. Examples would be Reverse Bend, Scud, Sproat, Limerick, Natural Bend, etc. Barb / Points - Manufacturers has many specialty barb and point designs that are popular for specific fly designs.
